Hi

My winter's build will be a Super Kaos for electric power. I'll post some pictures if anyone's interested. I've already got some foam wings from Elation Models (thanks Steve - they are super).

However, I don't want to spend hours making a bubble canopy. does anyone have a source of these? When i was building my Tweedy Bird i just couldn't find one that was likely to fit.

Thanks

Vortex Vacform offer bubble canopies in various sizes. The sizes are shown, so maybe one will suit.

I'll be using Vortex canopies on the Kwik Fli 40s as well.

Is it the Super Kaos ( 59 inch ) or the Super Kaos Junior ( 52 inch ) that you are building? The Junior seems a very handy size for electric.

Perhaps you would let us all know what size of the various Vortex canopies suits the Super Kaos and maybe Martyn will also state which one fits the Kwik Fli 40 in due course.

Thanks for the replies so far. I have done a thread here on the Tweedy Bird that is similar in size to the Super Kaos Junior. I haven't had the chance to fly it much but I can say that so far it is a good flier and it goes very well on 4S. It is a reduced size Dirty Birdy.

I don't like buiding the same model twice in quick succession so having some HiTec HS 225mgs and a JP Energy 52 size brushless motor I thought I would build a Super Kaos (59inch). The great thing about these Bridi designs is the fuselage building. You build it upside down on the top deck of 1/4 balsa. It makes building a straight fuselage much easier. I will use 5s Lipos and the performance should be plenty fast enough for me, especially if I can keep the weight to around 5ibs.

When I was building the Tweedy Bird I looked into the canopies from Vortex but those available seemed to be 'fighter plane' canopies rather than teardrop shapes, at least in size I was looking for, There is a minor difference in that the teardrop style used by the old F3A planes (particularly the Dirty Birdy) didn't have the flat windscreen.

From the pictures I've seen of SKs, fighter canopies have been used so it isn't that important for authenticity. I'll probably get a Vortex one.

I'm gathering the bits I need while I wait for my new workshop to be ready. Hopefully, construction start just before Christmas.

You could try these guys

I recently bought a couple of Aurora 45 canopies and a Dirty Birdy one from them. Prices are not unreasonable, shipping's a bit steep but service was impeccable and quality looks good to me.

Having said that, they don't actually list a Kaos one - the Quick Flea may be similar?

Thanks for that. They do seem to have the right type of canopy and the prices are reasonable as you say. How much did you pay for shipping if you don't mind me asking, please?

Cloud Models, who make the PB Bullet, Tornado and Calibre also sell the canopies. One of them might be suitable. They were very cooperative and helpful to me when I wanted info on their 1980s Hornet.

Pegasus list a bunch of SIG canopies:

I have one of the 11" bubbles on order - hasn't arrived yet, so can't tell you what it's like. I'm doing a low wing Puma of around the same size that also has a flat top fuselage like the Kaos - similar needs. I'll try to remember to get a picture on this thread when it comes.

Have you tried Pegasus models, they sell the SIG items in various sizes. I have used them on several occasions and they are a good thickness and well moulded.

Good price and reasonable postage from Pegasus too.yes

Didn't see the previous post about Pegasus before I posted Doh! You could also look at Brodak in the USA. I have used them before and they gave me good service. Try not to look at all the kits though, it gets expensive.....cheeky

IIRC, I paid $17.00 for the three canopies and $13.50 delivery.

Small credit card transaction fee too.

Delivery was about 10 days from memory

Hi Wfm,

Good luck with your build and your workshop - You're always welcome to call with your requirements as we have some unidentified canopies (and cowls, etc) that aren't listed on either the website or our Facebook page.
