Hi, Got a Laser engine with a purple anodised carb and P2 on the engine mount lugs. It also has a 6 finned cyl head. Just need to know if its a 90 or 91 if anyone can help please. Its probaby 8 to 10 years old or thereabouts. Thanks everyone.

The engine is an 80 and was made between 1995 and 1999. The P could be to do with car registrations and would represent 1996 if my maths is right. We copied car reg letters for date stamps until about 1997 when a single number 7, 8 etc was used for the year. Since then we have used 00 (2000) to 16 (2016) for our date stamps.

The Irvine carb could need replacement, the silicone over the slow run needle seems to suggest the o rings are on their last legs. The needle and jet had been replaced sometime after 2006 and is of the new style.

Beyond that if its in good mechanical condition then its a goo buy, but even if not I can still service this engine and have parts available. Assuming no surprises a full service (bearings, piston ring, valve springs, clean/test run etc) is only 70 quid and returns the engine to almost as new.

Let me know what you need

Thanks Jon. I knew the previous owner well, now sadly deceased and the engine was run rarely but I had no idea it was as old as the nineties! I will try it in my test bench and then get in touch again. Many thanks for your rapid response.
