Hi all. I'm looking for the impossible! The magazine that got me into models as a child...It must have been the early 80's and I was given a bunch of model flying magazines. In one I distinctly remember an article about vintage models, and there was a picture of a 'Black Magic' along with another model, and elsewhere in the magazine was a picture or plan and article about a Widgeon, which may have been peanut size.

Can anyone help or does anyone remember this? I'd love to get hold of a copy.

Any help much appreciated.

Radio modeller I think possibly Stewart, I may have this in my collection as the Widgeon Plan rings a bell with me. I'll check tomorrow and let you know.

There was a regular vintage model column by Gordon Counsell in the RM during the 1980's but I don't recall a plan for the Widgeon & there isn't one listed in the plans handbooks. OTOH sometimes free plans didn't make it to be sold seperately after publication & these wouldn't appear in any later plans list.

You could try looking at magazine

They do back copies of all the rc mags and have colour pics of the covers together with a list of contents for each . For example

The cover photos may jog your memory?

Cheers guys, I appreciate it. I would love to find this magazine again. I remember trying to make the black magic out of Lego and using my mothers hair dryer to heat shrink and cover the wings in cling-film!!

I'm trying to search the memory vaults to remember more from the magazine, but it escapes me.

Peanut size is pretty small and not common in the old Radio Modeller mag, - I think. Was the model rubber powered and was it originally published in Aeromodeller? I had a look on Aerofred, which is a plans archive of sorts and found this, with a 36in span but it dates from 1943!. I wondered if it could have been reprinted in Radio Modeller in the 80s as plans are often resurrected. I take it the model was a Westland Widgeon and not a Grumman Widgeon?

There was a semi scale model called Widgette based on the Widgeon pulished as a plan & build article in RCM&E July 1987 but it's a 53" span RC model.

Is it possible that you saw a reference or advert for the West Wings rubber model kit of the Widgeon in one of the RC model mags ?

that was possibly the RC Aircraft Extra published by RM or RCME. I have the magazine in my collection - it contains Boddington's Black Beauty an enlarged  Black Magic, together with plans for a Mini Eros and also Gladiator, etc etc.

No mention of Widgeon that was in a Scale Aircraft Special  of the previous year I think......still checking on that.....What info do you want from it?

There was an article on " the Woodcock Way Litho" by Ross Woodcock which showed his " world class Widgeon " in the RC Scale Aircraft Special of about 1983. That plane also featured in another of RM or RCME's magazine around that date if memory serves.. There was also aplan called Widgette in Radio Modeller which was a ver semi scale Westland Widgeon.

The Westland Widgeon was in an article in RC Scale Aircraft Special 1983 and the article had photos of Ross Woodcocks model named Kookaburra. Article was titled Doing it Dirty referring to muting the colours and dirtying up for scale appearance.

The article about Thatcham turbines was in RC Aircraft Extra   of about 1984  ( same issue as the Black Beauty.)'s not dated but about 1983 or 84. So the articles are in two different 'Special' issues.
