Organised by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the journey of the Lancaster will take place on Wednesday May 16 to mark the 100th anniversary of the RAF and the 75th anniversary of the RAF raid on major German dams by 617 Squadron - later known as The Dambusters. There will be opportunities to see the legendary aircraft as it heads from RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, over the Derwent Dam in the Peak District at around 12.05pm and down the Derwent Valley over Chatsworth, before heading to Rolls Royce in Derby and onwards to the Eyebrook Reservoir in Rutland ( near Leicestershire) .

I was there in 2013 standing near the Stoke Dry jucution on the A6003, there was so much traffic nothing moved for about 2 hours.

Map Link :  estimate about 11 miles from home - I think this year I'll go on my bike.

Worth remembering that Richard Todd was 36 when he portrayed Guy Gibson in the 1955 film, Gibson being just 24 at the time of the raid.

Will the wind speed forecast today lead to cancellation of the Dambusters anniversary flypast near Sheffield, Derby and Eyebrook?

It reads :

Todays flight down Derbyshire’s Derwent valley by the BBMF Lancaster is likely to be called off, official BBMF sources say. However, Dambusters Blog understands that there is a possibility that the flight is simply being postponed, and may take place on Thursday 17 May – but only if weather conditions allow.

That is a pity. If the weather is too bad for the flight down the Derwent valley perhaps they could do the commemorative flight down the Ruhr valley instead? wink 2

Well that might be one way we could facilitate our exit from the EU Piers...........

According to my student pilot's log book the Dambusters fly by over the Derwent Dams was on May 19th in 1993. I was on a gliding course at Camphill and on the morning of the 19th my instructor took me soaring all along the ridge that contains Win and Lose hills which overlook the dams. I remember watching the ASI showing over 90 kts with my instructor at the controls. We gained a lot of height over Win Hill which was crowded with spectators and executed my first and only loop in a full size aeroplane!

My friend flew in the afternoon and they were unable to get enough altitude to get back to the airfield, which is quite high over the valley with soarable ridges to the south and west. The usual landing out fields were packed with spectators' cars for the Lancaster fly past so our instructor landed on a school football pitch in Hope between the goals by side slipping it in.

Quite a day!

Geoff

PS I'm surprised there's room in Rutland for more than one reservoir.  Most of the county was flooded when they built the rather large Rutland Water devil

...and we get earthquakes, we had two large one's in 8 days once.

BBC reported :

It is the ninth earthquake to be recorded in Rutland since April 2014, when there were three in one month. The largest tremor was recorded in January of this year, and had a magnitude of 3.8.

There was a super picture of the Derwent dam in this morning's Guardian ... with a Typhoon flying over it! Apparently the Lancaster was grounded because of high winds. It was really cold yesterday where we live about 25 miles south of the upper Derwent valley with a strong NE wind so I'm not surprised. It grounded me too!
