If it's any help Danny I used solartex on the uc struts then sprayed with rustoleum chrome I am happy with it and will do the same on the centre wing struts . On another point I would have wrapped the silk using weak pva glue

Yes thats a good idea on the diluted pva. It seems my silk is momme 8 and the good stuff is momme 4. I can find 5.5 but no 4

I find solartex always wrinkles eventually, and as some of my models are more than ten years old wanted to avoid Solartex. But wrapped in strips should be okay....

Thanks Martian, perhaps those that haven't done this bit yet should consider that approach?

Martin F pointed out a measurement that I had not checked, thanks Martin very valid observation!

The distance from the leading edge to the front of the centre section forward bulkhead should be 70mm.

Mine is pretty close, not going to lose any sleep over the discrepancy.......

Hi Danny what is the reason/advantage of using two channels for the aileron .thanks

Two channels makes it easier to make independant adjustments. Ie like differential, centring, end point adjustments.

Hi All, Any thoughts re position of the RX. There is quite a lot of alloy in one form or another around the nose. I've treated muself to one of the new spektrum recievers (the one with an internal arial)

Reports re range are excellent, even better than normal, but, I wonder?

Hi Alan, I am really struggling to find the product you have indicated:

Can you give the description please, I am finding silk, Chiffon with a 5307 code. Georgette has a code 4272.

A little help please?

Meanwhile back on the bench I have added the two litho plate gun troughs

Top centre section clad in Litho plate, this is proving very difficult to keep blemish free as there are notches to cut in the corners, certainly is going to look more beat-up than the one at Duxford!

Harringtons look to have updated (!) their website. It seems a bit screwy now.

You used to be able to use the order form to request a sample, which is what I did.

This is the stuff I ordered, but it looks like it is no longer listed:

4201/I Ivory Pure Silk Chiffon, £9.99, It weighs 17g sq m as opposed to 12g - an insignificant difference.

I will dig out my quote form and sample I got from them tonight. I suppose you could always ring them and quote the code I gave you. If it's no longer available they might supply you an alternative sample. I liked the ability to get a sample first to check it was what I wanted.

I'll report back tomorrow with my document and bit of silk...

FWIW, I think the 5307 stuff is close but it's shot up in price!

Thanks Alan. I haven't held modelling silk in my hands for thirty odd years, so a sample is no good to me. I already have £36 quids worth of silk from a "guess" I would rather not waste any more money and more to the point I have found over the years that if you don't use the right product you wont get the right result. Take glass cloth for example, I got through some rubbish before I discovered good cloth. I don't experiment, I just use what I know will work. I guess I am going to have to go down the Free Flight Supplies route if I can get hold of Mike.

That's an odd response Danny. The sample is tiny, about 3" x 2" and is free of charge, they send a quote at the same time.

If you can't make a decision based on that, then fair enough, but please take it from me that my sample was good enough to compare with my remaining Esaki and decide that it is a cheaper and more convenient size to use.

Coupled with the recommendation from Bill Dennis who I am sure you are aware is an excellent builder, that was good enough for me.

Still, if you think it might be rubbish, then don't waste your time.

Hi Alan, sorry if I appeared abrupt, as I said it is difficult for me to know what the correct silk is from feel, I haven't got an old piece of Esaki to compare it with, and I was in my teens the last time i had some in my hands, so even if it is a free sample, its pointless. I cannot tell without something to compare it with.

That site doesn't appear to give the silk specs, no weight or momme value. But other sites with similar products, Beckfords for example, are talking about 34g sq/m. Much too heavy.

Cheers

Following an email conversation with Bill where he filled me in on a few details, I rang Harringtons. The 4202i is still available, but it is now £17.49 a meter, so not a great deal of saving over Esaki. I have ordered a couple of meters. Bill also suggested I use polyester tissue, which is probably a good idea but initially I will try normal tissue. Some have suggested Tea Bag tissue.

More litho work today if I get some time. Andy has kindly sent me some esaki silk to compare, thanks Andy

Hi, what electric setup are you using on this, cells, motor, prop size? Many thanks............Martin

Hi Martin, this is on 2 x 5S 2700 mAh packs in parallel so 5S 5400 mAh.

The motor is a Turnigy 5060 probably the 270 kV but could be higher. Prop will be scale at around 22"

Just one more cheek section to add and that will complete the removable upper centre section litho work.

Thanks Martin, I wanted to do it all with Litho plate, but I couldn't so the nose ring, so some will be litho and some aluminium foil. we will have to see how it looks.

I have found another source of Chiffon Silk, rather than £17.40 a meter this is £5.99 it is supposed to be 3.5 momme so we will see how it compares to the Harrington silk. The price difference is very small for the Harringtons compared to Free Flight Supplies price.

Cheers

Looking really good Danny . 're the cowl i have found two ways to tone down the foil number one a spray of rustoleum chrome which can be buffed up to match litho ,number two a light polish with Autosol which is also perfect for polishing the litho
