Ok I know this is probably not the first time this has been asked but for me time is short. I am visiting from Canada and visiting old friends who live in Halton nr Lancaster, can anyone point me in the right direction for any hobby shops - RC airplane - that would be within an hours travel that would be worth a visit.

I was in Oxford last week and it was a bit of a bust, next week I will me in Essex in the Maldon Colchester area so any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you David, it seems LMS’s are closing here the same as at home even though building is on an up swing.

Tony, Wireless Madness in Preston, 40mins. away are worth a visit, depending on what you are looking for, they have a website to give you an insight, no Tim Hortons in Preston though, Good Luck.

Model & Hobby World North West, who are based in Morecambe near Lancaster, are due to open up anytime soon. As I understand it, the owner has had some difficulty in getting an electricity supply connected. It seems the shop had previously been out of use for some time.

Mobile No. is 07435 270158

From Lancaster, Steve Webb Models at Frodsham Cheshire is just down the M6 motorway, turn right on the M56 and it takes you there.

Just round the corner to someone used to the wide expanses of Canada.

A grand shop by the way.

The Balsa Cabin in Maldon would be well worth a visit if you like building planes. Bring a big suitcase if you want to buy some wood.

Balsa Cabin are at an industrial estate in Maldon. Colin Bliss Models used to be in High St Maldon probably still are but only open 3 days a week.

Recently someone asked about Model shops near Heathrow airport and if you are going home via Heathrow it might be worthwhile visiting  Slough RC.

Another suggestion for Steve Webb models. Friendly knowledgible staff and very well stocked - if you like building upstairs at the shop is an Aladin's Cave!.

PS Just be aware of one thing,...there is a special lock on the door at Webbies which means you can go in no problem, but it seems to be impossible to get out without spending at least £50 wink 2

BEB, you had a lucky escape if you got away with spending only £50. laugh

Have a look at these two... (Hockley, Southend. Next to the railway station) (Colchester)

While in Colchester you might like to rake a look at Rapid Electronics - a good source of tools and bits for the modeller. See os-1t1:dev-c&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIvrbLurDK3QIVTLDtCh12Uwg2EAAYASAAEgJbQPD_BwE">

There is a model shop in Brentwood I believe.

The really GOOD one is in Norwich on the main London to Norwaich line which,of course, runs through Colchester. That is Pagasus Models and is reallt top notch

There is A1 Models in Colchester which is pretty good I believean would certainly be worth a visit

I hate this keyboard!!!!

Not in Brentwood unfortunately! Brentwood England that is - there is a Brentwood in Los Angeles and Boston USA.

As a Brentwood MFC member I can tell you that our nearest would be Active Scale Models in Hockley but note that is near Hockley station not Southend station!

I believe visitors from outside EU can obtain refunds of the VAT ( sales tax currently 20 percent ) when they leave with goods bought in Britain if they have the VAT invoice. Ask for a VAT invoice from the shop and find the refund office at the airport.

Ok lads, no squabbling 😋😋 yes Pete you are right I will be in the Maldon area next week - I was born and raised in the Dengie hundred - visiting friends and relatives I’ve not seen in a long time.

The Balsa cabin has been mentioned before and is definitely on my agenda as I will be staying in Goldhangar for a while. I really just wanted to have a look at what is available here as opposed to home.

Also I’m on the lookout for a small kit or plan that could be flown in a small gym but is a little more aerobatic and challenging than the Vapor 😋😋 although taking off and landing on on a six foot table is more challenging than it appears, Pete any plans or suggestions?

Now I’m going to sign off and prepare myself for the motorways as I find it quite challenging after 43 years of driving on the “wrong” side of the road.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions especially the info on the VAT rebate possibility I will certainly check that out as £1 costs me approximately $1.70

I will keep you all posted on what/if I buy anything.

.You'll be fine, as the motorways round Manchester are known as "car parks" and usually move at a crawl - especially the Thelwell Viaduct...

Ok a big thank you to all of you for the help and advice, I did get the opportunity to visit the Balsa Cabin in Maldon, picked up some items that are unavailable to me at home, checked their balsa it appears to be excellent - that which I saw - so will give some serious thought to getting my lumber from them in the future

Paid a visit to the old ww1 Aerodrome at Stow Marie’s today, very interesting, there is even a fallen airman with the same last name as myself, that will require some investigation to determine if he was a relative?

Also dropped by the model airfield that is close by, there were a couple of guys flying but nothing scale, we were running short of time and I had to leave without introducing myself, would really have enjoyed swapping a few stories with fellow modellers, maybe next time.

Off to Colchester tomorrow to have a browse around there then over to Oxford before heading home on the 10th, again thanks all and I hope you have a good winter flying season.
