I'm considering removing the Orafilm covering on my new Pheonix Ka8B ARTF glider to make it more scale like. I don't want to go the conventional fabric dope & paint method & came across Oratex Silk Gloss. Has anyone used it or know someone who has. I've sent for a couple of samples from the German factory, but they won't arrive until the new year.

So it appears that Oratex / Oracover have introduced what appears to be an equivalent to Clear coat shown in the above link. Hopefully a British ontrapreneur will produce some to compete with the Germans high prices.

Andy,

I seem to recollect that Perkins are the official UK distributors for Oracover. This looks very interesting. (I'm assuming its a spin off from their full size aircraft range). Be very interested to see how you get on .

That's a coincidence I've been emailing them about the air brakes on the Seagull K8B to see if I could get a set, but they are showing me the servoless electo brakes at £60 a pair which would need 2 pairs to be correct.

IMO at model size Orafilm gives excellent representation of the full size fabric & paint finish, certainly looks more accurate than Glosstex.

I wonder what the difference is (other than £9 a roll) between "White" and "Scale White"?

The samples will reveal all?

The samples from Oracover arrived from Germany this morning. Unfortunately I've decided to sell on the Ka8B (see classifieds). After examining them, there is a big difference between the Oratex standard & Oratex silk gloss. Of the two I prefer the standard Oratex more akin to Solartex. However, that isn't to be now. If anyone wants the samples PM me.

Is the Silk Gloss stuff anything like Glosstex, with a coated/finished surface Stearman?

Glosstex was good in that it gave a nice complete painted finish, but it was too heavy for most smaller models

Martin

Perhaps the *scale* stuff comes with printed stitching and access panels? wink  Quite why the big price difference, I haven't a clue........ I plan a trip over to Airtek in Yorkshire at some point ( I need a handful of new receivers), and will take a look at the range of *Ora* products.......

Hi Percy

I haven't seen Glosstex so couldn't comment, however, I wouldn't have used the Oratex silk gloss, preferred their standard Oratex which has a silky shiny textured finish, similar to the old Solartex.

I was also sent a set of samples by Oratex. The Silk finish has a "satin" finish to it . ie not as "glossy" as Glosstex (I have both a sample of Glosstex and the Oratex in front of me. )

I'd agree Percy with your comments regarding weight of Glosstex. I'm pleasantly surprised that the Oratex "silk finish" is similar to standard Oratex. I have ordered a few rolls for my next project.

Ah right Eric. Glosstex had a heavier feel over standard Tex as it came already coated with Solarlac paint. I imagine it was a slightly different formulation to the tinned stuff, as it had to have some shrinkage capability. Even at that Glosstex didn't shrink anything like normal Tex. In particular It didn't take to compound curves too well.
