Hi Piers, I am about to cut free the ailerons, but the plan does not show that the ribs need facing. After cutting the smaller riblets will need facing with a tapered piece of balsa as well. Can you confirm this please. Cheers ps what with laminated wings tips this build has been a challenge for me. Cheers

It looks as thought the ribs have a separate piece of balsa at the front ( judging by the wing plan) which is not shown on the rib section. If you fitted that piece it should be sanded to shape after cutting off. If not already fitted the ribs may need to be shortened when cut free.

You could shorten the ribs by making a balsa template to show the line to cut to.This would ensure the ribs are all the same length,  then shortening the template for the tip rib.   You might reinforce the joint by a tiny bit of 1/8 sq if needed.

FB3, do you have the RCM&E article for the build?

I don't have access to the online magazines at the moment and my stack of magazines don't go back far enough but if you can get hold of RCME Vol 41 Issue 13 (that's 1999) then that might help.

Hi KC. You are correct, I can now see things as the build progresses. I have built numerous models from plans, but this one is a challenge only because of issues on the plan lol. Ian I do not have the article but will try Sarick  today. Thanks both.

The plan is on Outerzone here Ian. Once cut free, the aileron riblets will need shortening by 1/4in before adding the 1/4in facing. I find filing grooves in the facing piece for the ribs to be slightly rebated into, is stronger than just butting against the facing piece. The rear spar is also not full depth, so strips should be added to make it so in front of the ailerons, (if you see what I mean). That is how I would build it at any rate!

The drawing is not particularly clear, probably because it was drawn from a scaled up rubber design that didn't have ailerons. Hope you get it sorted fly boy.

Well i't not in a 1999 RCME - it's in the issue Late December 1998 it seems!

If you look at the thread here it says about this and shows a build in progress which might help.  In particular you might take note of this comment ........

"  There are problems with the plans.
In particular bulkhead #1 is off on the location of the stringers , use #2 to get the bottom 3 stringers to line up. I also could not see running the top and bottom 1/4"
longerons the length of the fuselage . I just made the 1/4" sheet sides a 1/2" taller
and notched last 1 1/2" of the sheet for the longerons ."

Thanks KC, thread and pics. very useful indeed. Had a bit of bother with the wings, now sorted, so prepared for a bit more work when I start on the fus lol. The model in the thread was electric and I must say the lines looked very clean without a lump of metal in the front, but it was designed for a 32four stroke . Cheers

FB3, if you look here **LINK** there are, rather poor, images of the pages from the magazine describing the Sportster.

I contemplated building one of there as I have a spare OS26FS looking for a plane, hence I searched the net for info.

In the end I think I may build something different, but, if yours turn out OK I may reconsider!!

GDB

Aha!! Just clicked on the above link and it does indeed display the pages in question, but, they're not exactly readable!!

If you're interested, send me a PM with you email address and I'll send the original files to you.

Okay I have recovered my original magazine 'Vol 14 Issue 13 £2.65 11Dec - 7 Jan 1999' and plan.

The opening paragraph regarding building the wings makes interesting reading regarding the ailerons, "Wings are very straightforward, I recommend using a 1/16" balsa spacer between aileron and wing spars whilst building".
