Dave,

The red and blue were HK film, the red solid Carmine and the blue pirate blue. Only the white is oracover which was because there was no white in the HK warehouse and I found MSL was selling seconds of oracover lite . Never used the lite before, it so light it is nearly transparent !

Thanks for that. I’m covering my hunter in oracover but not sure of the shade of red. Think it might be bright red. Has anyone started on the hunter yet. I’ve got the fuz and wing built. I’ve also modified the wing to give more room for battery access. I was lucky to have the plan pack bought as a christmas present.

ive still not flown the gnat as yet due to the crap weather up here. I was pleased with the all up weight of 22.6oz so hope it flys ok. I think by the time we get some good weather I will have a lot of maidens to do with all my electrics and leave my large models at home.

ive built the fuz and wing and modified the wing to allow easier access for the battery. I cut a 40mmx20mm recess into the leading edge of the wing in the front of the centre section and then fitted a piece of 1/8 lite ply as a support if all that makes any sense.

i was having a close look at your fantastic Gnat and wondered if you use the covering on the canopy as it seems to be seamless from the wood to canopy. If you do would you mind letting me know how you do it without melting the canopy as I would love to be able to achieve that finish.

Dave,

Seamless is a trick of the light. After covering I just add a small strip of covering a couple of cm wide to span the gap between model and canopy. Then just use the iron on the lowest temp that causes the film to stick properly.Do not show it a hot air gun unless you are very very brave and don't mind a mess! You can add the strip before covering if you want. Not sure the result is any different.

Thanks for that Tim. I will give it a go but I don’t think I will try the hot air gun!

Hi all,

I'm brand new to plan building and (perhaps a little foolhardy) was tempted by the TN Gnat plan so have purchased all the wood and a few tools to get started with. I have some building skills from old Guillows style kits and model rocketry, but would appreciate any tips regarding the Gnat - especially with regard to which glues to use in order to keep weight to a minimum.

Wish me luck!

Also - that RAE Gnat looks absolutely stunning. What a great scheme.

Wow what a thrill. Finally got a flying day again so had the Gnat maiden flight. No wind , blue sky bright sun, so apart from probably not being able to see it, why not. Absolutely brilliant, no problem pulling away from the hand launch, oodles of power. Never flow anything so fast, I’ll be buzzing for days!

Thanks Tony.

Difficult to capture on an iPhone but here are 2 short videos . 1st and 1st landing.

Sorry for the late reply Dave.

Yes I've started. Got the fuse, tail and wing cut and shaped but still the nose and controls to sort. I have a thread going in the mass build section.

Thanks for the photo, the wing hasn't been in the fuse yet so that will make more sense when I give that a go.

And finally 1 still which was worth pulling out of the video. Got a lot of video of a very small dot travelling very quickly!

Most of the first flight was 1/2 throttle while my brain adjusted, 2nd flight let it go a bit more. I had to add a fair amount of up trim so I think I may pull the cg back a notch for the next flights.
