P.S. I did once knock up a very rough 12th scale Hawker Hillson FH 40 (the slip wing Hurricane mentioned a few posts back) and during its one brief flight, did manage to achieve what the designers never managed and released the top wing in flight.

I've still got it somewhere so maybe one day I'll give it another go?

No so recognisable as the Slip wing Hurricane but there was the Hilson Bi Mono prototype.


Unlike the Hurricane It did manage to slip the top wing - over the sea at Blackpool!

It was the advent of the variable pitch prop (initially just 2 position) that improved the take off performance of Spitfires and Hurricanes, even from grass, so as to make the slip wing concept redundant.

I thought the idea was to be able to make a one off flight from a conventional ship for last ditch (how appropriate!) protection from aerial attack on a convoy.

I liked the story about providing Spitfires with take off flaps to fly off the marginal carrier space to land on Malta during the siege. As most will know, they had two position pneumatic flaps - retracted or full deflection - so they made wooden wedges which stopped them retracting fully and simply dropped them with a quick cycle of the mechanism once a safe flying speed had been achieved!

I've long liked the look of the Snargasher & it's developments, the Bobsleigh/Desford. but never been able to find any decent scale drawings.



Here's two ground shots of the Snargasher



I think these are of the RS 3 Desford...


...then later the Bobsleigh after it had been modified as the RS 4 for experimental work on a prone pilot position in the late '40's early '50s. A Gloster Meteor (can't remember which Mk) was also used in the project, IIRC Eric Brown flew the both types during the prone pilot position trials.

Im progressing towards a Mig 1.44 for two VT80 turbines. There is only one Mig 1.44 and this resides in a museum having flown only a few times after the Russians opted for J10 design instead. Having started with a balsa profile model the next step is a 60 powered model of a Mig 1.42 "LFI" at 1/12th scale. The 1.42 was the single engine version but this never got off the drawing board at full scale. This model was to have a turbine but i decided my vt80 was too big for it so went for a 65AX just to prove it (may convert to a smaller turbine if its a success) . Its at the painting stage so will hopefully fly this summer. The model of the 1/10th scale 1.44 "MFI" (or flatpack as its western codename) just needs a glass fuselage casting. The bottom pic shows the wings attached to the plug used for the mold!

Can't find a still but how about this all-carbon turbo-prop successor to the venerable Antonov AN-2? It's the AN-2 MC. The words are Russian but the video tells the story;
