After a very strange year, this project is running again.

Having repaired all damaged sheet areas in the wings, I am now fibreglassing each wing with water based PU resin. This will strengthen the aged balsa sheet and provide a good base for the finishing film or silk covering.

Well after various distractions, finally this project continues.

All wing ribs and sheeting repaired as needed.

I decided as some of the balsa had become brittle, I would cover the whole structure, including open structures with 0.5oz glass cloth and water based PU.

The open areas of glass will be trimmed out then all will be covered in the traditional way with lightweight silk and dope.

Not much could be done to remove the coloured residues from the old profilm (artf covering). I will have to incorporate that into the final scheme. Sanding was risky and useless, so cleaning with MEK was attempted and that causes the colours to spread but at least smooths them out.

I was also a little worried about the centre join in the lower wing, so after glassing I added a 5mm ply plate shaped so it just fits inside the fuse up against the wing mounting plate that holds the blind nuts. On the outer surface there is a 1.5mm plate that covers the join and stops the screw heads biting in.

Checking lower wing fit and shaping new wing seats to line up the wing with the tail.

Now the wing covering in silk and dope is underway.

Using non shrink dope to attach the silk to the sheeted edges of each panel. Shrinking dope will be applied to the wing surfaces together.

Sometimes adding the pictures is a pain!
