I was doing some research into early aircraft and came across this video.

A very interesting piece of film I thought worth sharing.

Looking closely you can see that these aircraft appear to have a high gloss finish on them.

Have you linked to the correct video Kevin? I'm seeing a(n interesting) WW2 film showing the construction of Piper Cubs when I follow it.

I see the same Piper Video.

Some WW1 show aircraft fresh from the factory had more shine.

Other aircraft in service often had a sheen on them as a result of the castor coming from the total loss system of rotary engines.

Thanks Martin. That was the film that followed it.

I have seen similar footage of British aircraft manufacture at that time, which also shows glossy finishes. However, knowing the properties of the materials in use I don't think it would take long for the weather to dull down the finish. It is interesting to see though and at that time, how shiny (or not) it was wasn't an important factor.

Thanks for the link to the Piper Cub, I'm starting on Peters' Li'L Cub and this made for interesting viewing.

Great bit of historical film, shame about the spoiler logo splashed across it.
