Hi All,

I know that this is a long shot but does anyone have a 1/4 scale fibreglass Piper Cub cowl going spare??

I have come by an airframe from a modeller who now flies in higher skies but it came without cowl and struts. The engine is an ASP 160 flat twin which rather rules out a wrapped plywood cowl.

I've had a good look on the t'internet but can't find anything and no-one seems to be making aftermarket glass parts in the way that there used to be. A used cowl that has been cut is no problem as I can repair and make up existing holes before fitting it to this engine.

Decent price and postage covered

regards to all

Hi Stu

Mike Smart Designs had two types of 1/4 scale Cub cowl at one time. I'm not sure if the site is still up. I'll take a look........

You're in luck Stu

Try He has both J3 and Super Cub cowls, although the latter is out of stock. It's the J3 cowl you'll be wanting though, so I'd get in touch....

I only know of this site as I have bought plans/cowls from him previously......

A further option if needed could be a Sig 1/4 scale Cub cowl. Pegasus Models will be your port of call here......the Sig cowl comes in two halves and needs joining. This isn't a problem as it's moulded from quite thick plastic - about 3mm -, and once joined it's a rigid job.

Have you tried Carbon Copy?

I'll try ringing Mike Smart but the J3 cowl is shown out of stock on his web site and I had a feeling that he was running the business down now.

There was a thread on this forum some time ago about Carbon Copy being unresponsive but I'll have to look back and see what the outcome was.

Thanks for the suggestions. Anyone got one in their shed? any condition

If you can't find one, do you have access to a 3D printer?

This one on Thingiverse might be worth a look - it's very simple to resize it if it isn't the correct size for your model...

World Models do a quarter scale Piper Cub (clipped wing) and Stave Webb is the UK distributer, although I doubt he has any spares so it may be best to email World Models directly. Radar Hobbies in Hong Kong are the retail outlet for World Models in Hong Kong and they keep some spares in stock but they can get parts from the World Models factory in Shenzen. Could be worth a quick email to them at You could also WhatsApp them as they speak good English and I have always found them helpful. Incidentally, they do three colour schemes, Yellow, Red/white, and blue/white.

Why does an ASP160 rule out a cowl fabricated from wood, it is a fairly simple shape? Personally I would make a plug from foam to mould an epoxy/glass cowl. Time consuming if quite satisfying to do and not too irksome as you got the rest of the airframe ready built.

Hi Piers,

The large holes needed to let the cylinders out rather rule out a wrapped ply cowl. Making one from balsa wouldn't be hard but Glass is the better solution. I have made cowls from a blue foam plug but I thought that a Cub cowl might be an easy find off the shelf..... that seems to be no longer the case.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Pegasus models has in stock today 3 different versions of the balsa USA 1/4 scale j3 cowl.
