526th FIGHTER SQUADRON 1950s USAF GAG FILM "CHECKOUT DAY IN THE 526th" F-86 SABRE JET 34274

This silent, amateur "gag film" was apparently made by members of the 526th U.S. Air Force 526th Fighter Squadron sometime in the 1950s.

The unit provided Air Defense of western Europe throughout the 1960s-90s in Munich vicinity. Its last assignment was with the 86th Operations Group, based at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. It was inactivated on 1 July 1994. The film shows the unit's new F-86, meaning the film likely dates to summer of 1953, the squadron completed its move to Landstuhl and was reequipped with the F-86F Sabre Jet, the first unit in USAFE to fly the most modern American fighter.

The F-86F had been very successful as both a fighter and fighter bomber in the Korean War, and marked a quantum increase in the Wing’s capabilities. A year later the squadron was redesignated the 526th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron and assumed a new mission of air defense for the central European region. For this mission, the squadron was re-equipped with the rocket-armed F-86D Sabre interceptor which provided an all-weather capability.

The film begins with a car moving at high speed on German roads and then pilots are shown arriving for a "day's work" at :51. At 1:05 the Commanding Officer arrives in a big convertible car, which is then revealed to be a scooter lol! At 1:40 everyone celebrates the arrival of the F-86s but they are then killed by the engine. Further antics are seen throughout this hilarious film.

I loved that film! Hard to believe it was so long ago. The flying under a bridge bit upside down was a bit interesting.

Made from the F86 into the FJ-2 -

The North American FJ-2 Fury manufactured by North American Aviation is an American swept-wing carrier capable jet fighter developed from the F-86 Sabre to serve the U.S Navy and U.S Marine Corps.

The FJ-2 was used to evaluate the first steam catapult installed on a U.S. Navy carrier, featuring an all-moving "flying tail" without dihedral. Unfortunately the FJ-2 Fury was plagued with problems when operating aboard ship, prompting the U.S Navy to assign them exclusively to U.S Marine Corps squadrons in 1954.

As more advanced FJ-3/4 versions of the swept-wing Fury came into service the FJ-2 Fury was slowly phased out of active service.

The maiden flight of the FJ-2 Fury took place on the 27th of December 1951 and it went into service in 1954. Primary users were the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. T

here were approx. 741 FJ-2 Fury produced. The FJ-2 Fury retired from active service on September 1962.

Silent video -

Film footage of the Minutemen Aerial Acrobatic Team from the Colorado Air National Guard. This was the first and only Air National Guard flying acrobatic team that demonstrated along with the likes of the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels back in the 1950's.

Check out the start-up and text on the wing below, and it's powered by a Rolls Royce engine.

CAC Avon Sabre A94-983 Flight Display at Temora Invitational Scale Classic 2011 on Saturday 5th November.

This it is a CAC-27, it has North American F-86E wings (hard leading edges).

The landing gear, the entire empennage, canopy, and overall design is that of an NAA F-86 Sabre Jet. It was modified only to accommodate the larger engine, just like the Canadair Models. It's Sabre in it's best iteration

The CA-27/Mk32 used a much more powerful Rolls Royce RA-7 engine and the CA-27 Sabre used 2 Aden 30mm revolver cannon (one on each side), and big difference to the F-86F that used 6 Browning .50BMG machine guns (3 on each side of the nose)

The CAC Sabre, sometimes known as the Avon Sabre or CA-27,

Is an Australian variant of the North American Aviation F-86F Sabre fighter aircraft. The F-86F was redesigned and built by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC).

Equipping five RAAF squadrons, the type saw action in the Malayan Emergency in the late 1950s, and was employed for air defence in Malaysia and Thailand in the 1960s. Ex-RAAF models also saw service with the Royal Malaysian Air Force and the Indonesian Air Force.

The 'rock- music' at minute 8.00 into the mission is quite good.

Training Film for the F86.

A historical training public domain film made by the USAF for the safety of F-86 pilots demonstrating precision formation flying and acrobatics.

The Sabre is best known as the United States' first swept wing fighter built based on flight research data seized from the German aerodynamicists at the end of World War II.
