Anybody remember the SMAE in the early 60s?.

sad

Wasn't that a time when young people wore strange clothes, talked in an unusual language and took drugs ?

Some things don't change. (See the SMAE / BMFA for details) !

devil

I don't know about the SMAE (model aeroplanes with the things of the past for me in the 60s) but if strange clothes includes competing in motorcycle trials wearing flannels and a tie under my Barbour International suit then that was me! No drugs except (I'm ashamed to confess) tobacco and a very small amount of alcohol (honest) not much rock 'n' roll but I did manage a bit of the other

I don't get on very well with small models. I find my sweet spot is 1.3 to 1.5 metres - smaller than that I find hard to follow.

Thanks Robin - that is indeed my Mini Flying Machine in the article, still going strong 29 years later.

Leccyflyer, you're welcome!

I'm just wondering if we should let FMK know about the SMA revival, so they can get some MFM kits ready for the stampede to their door? laugh

If past performance is anything to go by. as soon as anyone mentions either FMK, or 5- star, they usually pop up in double quick time.

It was also the time when the RCM&E was the RCM&E when we built our own models, flew single channel which we also built. When 12 year olds could read a plan and build from it, knew how to cover, trim a model, use a soldering iron and read a multi meter. Arh those were the days. crying 2

Oh I'd be up for that. I like a little un. And I was a keen follower of Gray in RCMW when he was championing the SMA.

Just to put the record straight..The Small Model Association was my creation in the Engine Bay in Model World.

Just built a slightly enlarged version of my PAW 80 powered American Dragon

And yes, I still like small models and have just designed a 45" span semi scale high wing light plane fo small electric but would suit an 049 (Got an OK Cub .049.)

I am getting my prints and a PDF done this very morning

We still have sheets of the stickers that Peter Kent used in the kits from when we took over `The Miniature Aircraft Factory` Peter Kent used to put them in the kits, the ones with a magnifying glass over a small I was told you created these in the first place?

Yes, I did and I had some patches made and I still have my big Golf umbrella with them on it. I may possibly have one of the patches.

I must go an have a look.

I bought one of the original kits at the Nats swapmeet last year. reduced to £10, nobody wanted it. Will have to get it built.

Back to the meeting - It will probably be on a Friday, will look at a suitable date soon. Any suggestions welcome.

I still have my Aerobic kit which was a Radio Modeller plan and the Miniature Aircraft Factory kitted it for a time

Still have the aerobic kits now, unlike most of the kits it has changed a bit in construction kind of a mark 2! ( not that the mark 1 wasn't fine the way it was! ) , its just the construction is a little different with the laser cutting as when we did that one years ago and Will could not copy plans to cad, so he just draw new one based on yours using drawing board to take coordinates , so he drew a new one the same shape but different construction , will says he will probably do the original one again as he has now got a massive scanner so can scan them in as he did for most of the others, he has made the original ones as well on an off ,just not laser cut.

I didn't know it was still being made. Should be great for indoor flying.

How about adding SMA to the thread topics mods ?

Might make a nice place to discuss small models (aviation type !).

Great idea Kevin!

An SMA thread topic would then be a useful place for lists of suitable kits, plans, engines, wheels, tanks etc. without having to trawl through one long thread.

I was a big Derek Woodward fan (RIP)...this one has to be a contender for the SMA....DB Dracon....originally designed for a 049 cox,and quite happy with 100 watts electric.....i'm using a small 3s/800 m/a lipo.

There is a lot of fun to be had from the small rc planes. When I lived in France I built a Bumblevee which has a V tail plane hence the "vee" in the name.

The plan is available of outerzone plans https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=10613

Mine was fitted with a Cox Black Widow engine and was a great flyer. I am almost tempted to build another as I gave mine away when I left France. Great Fun/Price ratio.

No problem, done thumbs up

I can create a separate forum section (Like the PSSA and UKCAA) in due course, perhaps when the SMA becomes more formalised?
