I'm on the map now too.  There aren't many of us north of the border!

No float planes you old Austriansmile

I am not sure it is safe to fly water planes up here. Just last week I was driving along Bassenthwaithe (a lake near Keswick), when I became aware of a Tornado flying at about 10- 20 metres above the length of the lake. I immediately screamed at my wife, can you see the aeroplane. She stared into the sky, no I cannot see anything, was the reply. Then came, what the he..... is that, as the plane flashed past.

Which also reminded me of reading an old AMI (aviation Modeller International), where it showed a number of modellers flying slope models of the side of "Cat Bells" a ridge overlooking Derwent Water. About two years ago, my wife and myself were walking along Cat Bells when (if I remember correctly) a Harrier climbed up the side of the ridge from below passing over at about 10 -20 m, rolling inverted as he passed over. All fell into stunned silence, as we stared clearly into the cockpit, departing along Bassenthwaithe.

On any sunny day at least one Tocarno at about +50 m, with the occasional hawk, flies over the house, all heading for I would guess the Maryport direction.

On that basis I am not sure it is that safe to fly in the north lakes, at any height. I am very careful where I fly, and how high, as military avaiation can be quite active, welcome, awe inspiring. Be it a Hercules practicing low level terrain following flight, training jets, dog fighting.

I have occasionally flown of Sale Fell (Ling Fell) at the back of St Margaret's Church Nr Wythrop mill. Bit of a bump and narrow lift, but with occasional electric power flyable. Although slope is flown from Nr the Castle Inn Nr Bassenthwaithe, I have never seen any one else flying other than in the IMA mag.

I had heard that there was some flying from Whitehaven and off St Bees head, but a little far from me.

Great to see some international points on the map (as far away as USA, Aus & NZ), you will need to zoom out to see them from the default UK view.
