Hi all, Well Santa was kind enough to leave me some money this year and its burning an edf shaped hole in my pocket. Been looking at the various reviews in the mags from the last year but just makes it more tricky!
The latest lander f16 in rcm&e recently looked very interesting til the comment about not suitable as 1st edf. I would say I am intermediate to advanced flyer but never flown edf. My head says sabre, but a bit worried I would get a little bored after a while. Heart says something a little more lively.
Starmax models look quite interesting, but not sure how they fly. Landers look lovely too and I assume these are excellent flyers So, criteria as follows:

-Scale models only unless very compelling reason for non scale.
-£150-200 budget all up.
-Would prefer it to use 2200 3 cell as I have some already, but open to 4 cell or lower capacity especially if included in price.
-Something that is going to keep me interested & entertained without being an utter handful as 1st edf.
-Prefer hand launch unless there is a model out there that can cope with fairly short grass (can always just remove retracts I guess)
-reasonable duration, would like 5-10 mins ideally.

Over to you guys!

Ed

I would say the Phase 3 (Ripmax) EF-16 fits your spec exactly.
Plenty of info on it available on here.

Yes that's a good choice or for £110 - and out of the box (just bung in your Rx and 3S 2200) there's Art-Techs little Alpha Jet that flies a dream and (not sure how they've done it) sounds like a jet too.
Perfectly good for intermediate flyers albeit satisfyingly fast and smooth, belly finger holes to help hand launching, compact and strong too.

I'm a bit of a fan of this one I'm afraid and just bought another.

Yeah, I keep coming back to the phase 3, are they epo now? Thought I read that somewhere but can't find it again now. Are they better than the lander version? The Landers are a bit bigger which is appealing. David, the alpha seems to perform really well from the vids I have seen. For some reason just doesn't do it for me tho, not sure why. Haven't ruled it out tho. What are the other art tech models like? Not heard much about them but they have an f18, guess smaller wing will make it more of a handful tho.

I can't speak for the whole range, just the Alpha Jet in fact. They've a new Vortex 400 that I'm told is a speed demon and (independant) word is that it flies well.

Hi Ed,

I'm flying the Lander Panther, which was my first venture into the world of EDF, and I have to say it's a fantastic way to start. It flies very well on the Lander 68mm 3S setup, is easy to hand launch, and really looks the part in the air! Only down side is that it eats batteries! I've been running mine on Flight Power Evo Lite 3200mah 20C packs, and only get around 3.5 to 4 minute flight times. I'm currently looking around for a 4S motor to fit the Lander fan unit, as I'm ready for a bit more power - that's not to say that the Panther isn't quick enough for scale like flying on 3S packs - it certainly is, but the lunatic inside me is egging me on to go faster!!!

Hope this helps.

James

Anyone know anything about the Starmax Alpha ? Looks a little larger than the Art Tech one but runs on 4S. I've heard that Starmax spares are difficult to come by in the UK.
