Are they down for anybody else?

I find the classifieds has been down multiple times recently and painfully slow when it is up and now the main site is down too.

I hope they arn't paying anybody any money for that level of service!

Same here. Probably the worst site that I visit. from a performance perspective.

It annoys me so much, I'm on the verge of offering to host it for them!

Indeed. On several occasions, I've mentioned my IT skills on the subs form and suggested that I could help with the web site.

Have you noticed that at busy times, you tend to see the classifieds 'header' text appear long before the adverts themselves ? It looks like the system struggles to pull the advert data from storage (probably cassette tape by the look of things).

Lol, it does feel rather like bits of it are being retrieved from tape sometimes.

From the way I see the classified pages load it looks as though the standard bits on every page at the top load fine and things get bogged down when the actual adverts listing itself is being assembled. My guess is either a slow SQL query, missing index or not enough query read cache on the underlying DB

Quite. Now that we're getting into the detailed stuff, that's what I was saying with a colleague who also frequents the site and knows about SQL servers, etc.

Maybe they should stop sending the magazine and invest in their classifieds.

I wouldn't call it that but I don't spend more than ten minutes reading it.

The site has been poor for a long time now and they really did ought to have a look at it. As mentioned above, it could be something that's not difficult to fix.

Doing a quick Whois lookup at it seems that the BMFA site is hosted by 1and1.co.uk. perhaps on a very budget shared hosting account.

I am not suprised that the site is quite slow, the budget type of hosting tend to throttle their databases quite a bit, unless you start paying quite a bit more.

Interesting that bmfa.org is registered to an address on the Isle of Man.

Seriously, about half an hour ago, it was blisteringly fast for a couple of minutes. And then it wasn't.
