Well, after spending days looking through my collection of hundreds of 3-views I have gfinally chosenmy next project...just in time for lockdown.

It is an aircraft that has been on my list for a very long time but now it just clicked with my mood.

It is the Pilatus P-2

You can see it in my album P-2 Not put up hereas they are copyright

Not a bad choice at all. Although a Gee Bee R1-2 would be bettersmiley

The nearest to those that I might have considered is the QED

Maybe in about twenty years.

It is too much like most other current aerobatic aircraft

Not sure the world needs another Staudedgxtra... GBQED would have been interesting though.

I always think of the P-2 as the trainer with a juicer on its nose It'll be interesting to see how you engineer that!

The QED replica has some additional points in its favour

I understand slightly bigger wing and wider UC.

I have considered having a go myself. Each time I have thought, this is a PM type scale model. I would build the prototype if asked or offered.

The QED is also a lot longer.

It always amuses me.I say "Ok, this is what I am going to design end then get a whole lot of"You should design this...."

I design what I like. I have occasionally designed things that other people have pushed me into. I never like those.

Yes, I was pushed into it. IT just was not a type that I liked. I later did a Wittman Formula V racer and that was very nice.

It flew quite well but was hampered by a faulty engine which was later replace by J.Perkins. The ONLY SC engine that ever gave trouble. I was told that the head was incorrectly machined.

Apart from that it was fine but it just wasn't what I wanted to do.

The other one was the Midget Mustang. I wanted to increase the wing area over scale a bit bit was told not to. To me it lacked something and just did not fly with the same ease of my other designs. The wing loading was just a fraction too high.

Other people who prefer higher wing loading liked it.

Peter,

Interesting choice of the Pilatus P-2 and looking forward to following the design and build log (assuming you will do one).

Did a quick search of the web for details and I think it will be a nice model to fly with a wide flight envelope and your designers touch wink

What size (wingspan) and motive power plant are you considering for this one?

Hi Chris

It will be 1/8th scale 54" span, about 3 sq. feet of area and powered with my standard electrical set up

Two reason for the power choice, I will take it out of my converted Ballerina and this will save me some money.

Second, with that long nose an engine up front might need lead in the tail. But I will be kind and draw a power conversion nose.

Yes, I will do a blog on it.

Peter, I hope it was not me that you think was applying pressure. Encouragement yes.

I just thought the QED has a lot of the features of some of your other models, plus some character, potentially to make a nice flying model.blush

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but that is one of the most ugliest aeroplanes Erfolg! face 7. I think the only thing that will appeal to Peter is the red/white colour scheme, also used on his Ballerina, Miss Lizzy, and Moon Dancer 2 (amongst others).

In that view it doesn't look long enough and while I like the colour scheme Iamnot sure that t is the correct one.

I must check my 3 views

The club secretary had a big ARTF one about 11 years ago...He flew it once??!!

It actually featured on the cover of my book "EssentialTips and Techniques Vol 2" but that was manipulated to looklike a flyng shot
