When it's not raining and when the wind is blowing on the slope

There isn't really a windy season or wet season as such. This link shows you that it is slightly less windy and less rainy in summer, but not by huge margin:

I would also check out the Bwlch:

This series of slopes cover all directions. And are pretty awesome.

Hi Alan

For Rhosilli try and avoid local School holidays and weekends as it's a mecca for paragliders as well. I live within 12 miles of Rhosilli but rarely fly there, prefer to go more local which is less than 6miles away and no Parag's. If you're coming this far I hope you do head for the Bwlch at some time, the Wrecker and Crest are pretty extreme!

I'm hoping to go to stay near Pontypridd, in South Wales, for a weekend soon.

I saw someone on here mention Eglwysilan Rd, near Pontypridd a while back.

Anybody know anything about this place?

Should I ask any club nearby?

Can I just turn up and fly?

Which wind direction's best ?

Martyn. I fly near Ponty all the time. Take a look at my blog,

Sorry, I couldn't hyperlink it.

Eglwysilan flies well, but only on a westerly. A couple of miles to the south is Meio Common where the predominate slope is SW facing but, it also has a NW slope also. You just park up, ( by the large rocks on the western side of the road) and you will see a diagonal track leading up the slope. Walk along the slope till you get the wind directly into your face. The landing zone is good, if you hit a rock you will be very unfortunate.

You could also head on up to the Bwlch, which from Ponty is probably only a 20 minute drive. It is located between Cwm Parc and Nantymoel and has a slope for every wind direction. And huge slopes too. We're talking 1000ft high. This is probably one of the best slope areas in Europe, let alone Britain, and we see European visitors all the time in the summer.

There is a useful link on my blog about the Bwlch. But if you are coming up for a weekend then PM me and you can hook up with our little group and we'll show you where to fly.

Nice blog Steve, thanks.

If and when I know I'm coming up to Wales I'll give you a call.
